Yahoo!: Yet another hierarchical officious oracle
On January 18, 1995 the website Yahoo! Was created. It was created by co-founders Jerry Yang and partner David Filo. Yahoo! Is actually an acronym which stands for “yet another hierarchical officious oracle.”
The logo Yahoo! Uses used to be red with a black outline and a shadow. In May 2009 there was a theme re-design in which the old logo was changed to be now purple with no black outline around it and no shadow. Sometimes Yahoo! Is also abbreviated “Y!”
Yahoo! Is an extremely functional and convenient website. I use it all the time. The website contains many useful tools such as yahoo mail, messenger, maps, groups, and finance.
Yahoo! has become an even more convenient to me as it has created Yahoo!Mobile. I can now use yahoo on my own personal cell phone. I am literally a push away from instant messaging all of my friends, sending them emails and even blogging about whatever is on my mind all from my cell phone. My favorite feature I use on Yahoo!Mobile is the games. Whenever I am on the bus or bored or really waiting for anything I just pull out my phone, pull up Yahoo!Mobile, pull up the games and start having fun!
Another service Yahoo provides are social networking services such as Yahoo!Personals, Yahoo! Buzz, Flickr, Yahoo!360, and Delicious. This is a great service enabling us in our busy worlds to meet new people and connect with people more easily.
Now a days it seems most people tend to use the email method when it comes to communicating through letters. Well Yahoo! Made it even better because in May of 2007 Yahoo made it so that you have unlimited storage. Yahoo! Mail is the largest email service in the world. Yahoo! Mail was created on March 8, 1997.
Also on March 8, 1997 Yahoo! Games was created. It may not be a good thing or maybe it is, but that just depends on your point of view, but you can literally spend hours playing these fun games. There are many different games to play, so you can stay busy and entertained for quite a while.
A year later on March 8, 1998 Yahoo! Messenger was launched. You can type quick or long messages to your family, friends, co-workers etc. quickly and easily.
There are also many more practical uses and tools Yahoo offers. Yahoo has a tool called Yahoo! Search Marketing, which makes it useful for businesses to advertise their wares. There are products, sponsored searches, local advertising, and traveling opportunities advertised on this tool.
Yahoo also has Yahoo!Shopping, Yahoo!Autos, Yahoo!RealEstate, and Yahoo!Travel, which makes it easy for us to get good deals and information that is accurate quickly and get us in the right direction fast.
Now Yahoo of course is a great website and has been for quite some time now. Unfortunately Yahoo has had its fair share of controversy and criticism. First in 2000, there was a situation where there was a party in France that was looking to purchase Nazi Party memorabilia. Yahoo was then taken to court by France. In March of 2004, there was a program launched where a paid inclusion for commercial websites meant businesses could be guaranteed listings on Yahoo! Search engine after they had paid. October 2006 even after commercial websites have paid they still aren’t guaranteed any commercial listings. Instead they are actually only getting their sites crawled more often. On December 19, 2006 Yahoo!News message boards were closed because of a trolling phenomenon. The chat rooms were also closed in June 2005 due to Internet child predators.
Overall Yahoo continues to thrive, and in our busy worlds it offers many ways to make or lives easier or at least more fun. Yahoo provides us with the latest news, entertainment and also tons of sports information. It does not matter what time of the day it is, Yahoo is on top of all the latest news. If you need to find out something fast I am sure you can find it on Yahoo!!
