Bing is Microsoft’s new search engine that was officially unveiled by them on the 28th of May 2009. The complete launch was done in the first week of June when it became publicly available over the internet as bing.com. Bing thus takes over from the earlier search engine version of Microsoft that is, Microsoft Live Search.
The Bing homepage has a background image quite similar to that of its earlier version Live Search. Yet it has a distinct look of gloss and stunning photography on display. There are also a few links to the Microsoft Web properties on the homepage. The major change in the look and design has been the removal of the different search categories (images, video, maps, news and others) from the top of the search bar. These have been moved to an Explore section that is visible on the left side of the Bing home page. Making it look more crisp and clean.
Here, we also might share something different with you. There is an interesting concept as to why the search engine is called Bing. Bing is supposedly meant to mean Bing is not Google. And as Steve Ballmer Microsoft CEO said “short matters” and so it says and stays BING.
Bing has been created with an eye to capture a significant portion of the lucrative search engine business. Presently, the market is led by Google followed by Yahoo. However, Bing is an extremely solid improvement over the earlier Microsoft Live Search and has in it the ability to give some serious competition to Google and Yahoo. In fact it beats Google over several areas.
In head to head tests that have been conducted, Bing scores over Google. The search results are fast and much more relevant than Google. Google is definitely ahead in terms of the quantity of results but then Bing scores over the first page. And as we all know, very few move past the first page.
The search presentation is slick and in terms of relevance too, is better in case of Bing. This is because it makes use of the Powerset technology which displays the refined versions of the query as well, on the left hand side of the page. Also a text excerpt of the search result is made available if you take your mouse over it. Thus, you save a lot of time by not opening unnecessary sites.
Another feature of Bing worth mentioning is the live preview that is available of the videos when you move the mouse over their thumbnails. This is one place where Bing scores highly over Google. Thus Bing is much more successful with YouTube than Google.
We might also add that when you are looking for product comparisons and shopping over the internet Bing is a much better product than Google. Also when looking over news articles, Bing is much more aggressive in its intent in giving you the latest than say Google. Thus Bing brings not just value but also efficacy to its web searches.
The common verdict all around the web world is that Bing is a step forward for Microsoft. All search engines have their areas of strengths, and so does Bing. And though it has announced the rolling out of new features as it moves forward, yet it still has a lot of catching up to do with Google. The good thing though is that in all of it, the main beneficiaries would be the search engine users. After all everyone would prefer greater competition between the two giants Google and Microsoft as it would lead to a greater degree of efficiency and choices being made available in the world of web searching.
Finally, Bing is still a far way off from dethroning Google from its premier status in the world of search engines. Even Steve Ballmer is aware of the fact and understands that it would take a long time for them to do that. As he said at a launch conference, “There is no way to change the whole game in one step.” The short term goal would definitely be to steal Yahoo’s market share.
